Lifetime Value (LTV)

Lifetime Value is an estimate of the total net revenue a player is expected to generate for an operator across the whole time they remain active.

Definition

Lifetime Value (LTV), also called Customer or Player Lifetime Value, is a forward-looking estimate of the total net contribution a player is expected to produce over their entire relationship with an operator — usually measured on a Net Gaming Revenue (NGR) or contribution-margin basis, so it already reflects players' net losses after winnings, bonuses, taxes, and fees are accounted for. It is typically derived by combining how much an average player is worth per period (ARPU) with how long they are expected to keep playing before they churn, and future value is sometimes discounted to present value. Because it is a prediction rather than a booked figure, LTV depends heavily on the cohort, the model, and the assumptions used, and it is most often read alongside acquisition cost (CAC) as the LTV:CAC ratio. As a metric built on cumulative player losses, how far it can be pursued is increasingly bounded by affordability and safer-gambling obligations.

Worked example

Take a cohort of newly acquired casino players. On average each active player produces £30 of NGR (Net Gaming Revenue) per month, and the cohort churns at roughly 10% per month, implying an average playing lifespan of 1 ÷ 0.10 = 10 months. A simple LTV is therefore ARPU ÷ churn rate = £30 ÷ 0.10 = £300 of expected net revenue per acquired player (equivalently £30 × 10 months). If it costs £100 in marketing to acquire that player (CAC), the LTV:CAC ratio is 300:100 = 3:1, and the expected net contribution after acquisition is £300 − £100 = £200. A ratio near 3:1 is often used as a rough health benchmark: below about 1:1 the operator is paying more to acquire players than they are expected to return, while a very high ratio can signal under-investment in growth — but none of these averages describe an individual, who may deposit once and leave, or churn far sooner than the cohort mean.

Why it matters

For professionals, LTV is the metric that decides how much an operator can justify spending to acquire and retain players: marketing budgets, affiliate and paid-channel bids, VIP and CRM investment, and bonus generosity are all sized against expected lifetime value, usually through the LTV:CAC ratio. For learners, it explains the commercial logic behind the promotions and retention tactics they encounter — and, read critically, it makes plain that an operator's "high-value" player is by definition one expected to lose more over time. That framing matters because the same forecasting that guides business planning sits directly alongside affordability checks and safer-gambling duties: pursuing higher LTV cannot lawfully mean encouraging unaffordable or harmful play, and clear-eyed literacy about the metric helps separate legitimate planning from marketing that would push anyone toward treating gambling as income rather than paid entertainment.

Note: The concept is stable, but there is no single standardized formula. The revenue base (GGR, NGR, or contribution margin), whether future value is discounted to present value, the churn and lifespan assumptions, and the method (simple historical averages versus predictive/ML models) all vary by operator and materially change the number, so any stated LTV should be checked against its underlying definition. Benchmark ratios such as 3:1 LTV:CAC are rules of thumb, not fixed rules. Critically, how aggressively LTV may be pursued is constrained by jurisdiction-specific affordability, marketing, and safer-gambling rules — for example UK requirements not to target vulnerable or self-excluded customers — which should be verified against the applicable regulator.
