A device that continuously reshuffles returned cards back into the deck after every hand, so the shoe is effectively never depleted and there is no cut card.
Definition
A Continuous Shuffling Machine (CSM) is a mechanical shuffler used mainly in blackjack that takes discarded cards after each round and mixes them back into the pool, so play never pauses for a manual shuffle and the composition of undealt cards stays close to a full, freshly-shuffled set. Because cards are constantly reintroduced, a CSM effectively defeats card counting, which relies on tracking a depleting shoe. It also speeds up play by removing shuffle breaks, meaning more hands are dealt per hour. The basic house edge of the game is essentially unchanged by a CSM, but the faster pace increases how much money a player wagers over time, and thus their expected total loss.
Worked example
At a CSM blackjack table, after each round the played cards are fed back into the machine and remixed. A card counter watching for a ten-rich shoe gains no lasting information because the deck is continually reset, and with no shuffle pauses the table may deal 20% or more extra hands per hour than a hand-shuffled game.
Why it matters
For learners, the CSM shows how a procedural device can neutralise a skill-based edge without changing the printed odds. For professionals, it is a key example that per-hand edge and per-hour cost are different things: the same house edge applied to more hands means larger expected losses.
