Blinds and Antes

Forced bets posted before cards are seen that seed the pot and force action.

Definition

Blinds and antes are mandatory wagers that create something worth competing for before anyone acts. In Hold'em the two players left of the dealer post the 'small blind' and 'big blind,' fixed amounts that count as their opening bet. Antes are smaller forced bets posted by some or all players (common in tournaments and some cash formats) that further inflate the pot. Without these forced bets, players could fold every weak hand for free and the game would stall. In tournaments the blinds and antes rise on a timed schedule, steadily increasing pressure and preventing indefinite stalling. The size of the blinds also defines the stakes of a cash game.

Worked example

In a 1/2 game the small blind posts 1 and the big blind posts 2 before cards are dealt; a player wanting to enter must at least call the 2 big blind or raise.

Why it matters

Learners must know blinds define the cost of playing and rotate each hand, so everyone pays over time. Professionals track their stack in big blinds and, in tournaments, how rising blinds and antes change optimal aggression and stack-preservation.
