Volatility describes how bumpy a game's ride is — whether it tends to pay small amounts often or large amounts rarely.

Definition

Volatility (also called variance) measures how much and how often a game's actual results swing away from its expected value, capturing the size-and-frequency shape of outcomes over time. High-volatility games pay out rarely but with larger potential wins, producing wide balance swings; low-volatility games pay small amounts frequently, giving a smoother but flatter experience. Critically, volatility is independent of RTP: two games can share the same 96% RTP (and therefore the same 4% house edge) yet feel completely different because their variance differs. Statisticians quantify it as the standard deviation of per-round outcomes, and many slot providers summarise it with a low/medium/high label or a numeric volatility index.

Worked example

Imagine two online slots both configured at 96% RTP — meaning a 4% house edge, since RTP and house edge always sum to 100%. Slot A is low-volatility: it lands a win on roughly 28% of spins, with a top prize around 100x the stake, so a $1-per-spin balance drifts down slowly and predictably. Slot B is high-volatility: it hits on only about 18% of spins but tops out at 10,000x, so you might lose 50 spins in a row and then catch a 200x win. Over 10 million simulated spins both return about $0.96 per $1 wagered — identical long-run math — but across a short 100-spin session Slot B's results are spread far wider. That spread is volatility: the RTP is the same, only the shape of the short-run experience differs.

Why it matters

For players, volatility explains why a bankroll can vanish quickly even on a game with a fair RTP, and it shapes how long a given budget is likely to last — making it central to setting deposit and loss limits and staying within one's means (never a way to make money). For operators, game studios, and analysts, volatility drives session length, player experience, bonus-wagering exposure, and how many rounds must be played before results converge toward the theoretical RTP. Misjudging it is a common cause of both player frustration and flawed promotional risk models.
