RTP (Return to Player)

RTP is the percentage of all money wagered on a game that it is designed to pay back to players over the long run.

Definition

Return to Player (RTP) is a theoretical, statistical measure expressing the share of total stakes that a game is mathematically expected to return to players as winnings across a very large number of plays. It is the mathematical complement of the house edge: RTP and house edge always sum to 100%, so a game with 96% RTP has a 4% house edge. RTP is calculated over millions of simulated or recorded rounds and describes the long-run average only — it does not predict the outcome of any single session, which can range from a total loss to a large win due to volatility. The figure is set by the game's underlying math model and reported by the studio, then independently verified by testing labs and, in regulated markets, disclosed to players and auditors.

Worked example

A slot advertised at 96% RTP is expected, over the long run, to return €96 for every €100 wagered, leaving a €4 house edge per €100 staked. Imagine a player makes 10,000 spins at €1 each, staking €10,000 in total; the theoretical expectation is roughly €9,600 returned and €400 retained by the operator. In practice a single session of a few dozen spins might return far more or far less than 96% — the advertised RTP only emerges as the sample of plays grows very large. Note that "returned" money is itself recycled back into further bets, so cumulative losses over extended play tend toward the house edge rather than a fixed 4% of a one-time deposit.

Why it matters

RTP is the single most important number for understanding the cost of playing a game: it tells a player what the game is built to keep on average and lets a professional compare products on an apples-to-apples basis.
