Vulnerability

Circumstances or characteristics that make a person more susceptible to gambling harm or less able to protect themselves.

Definition

In player protection, vulnerability describes situations that heighten someone's risk of harm or reduce their capacity to make informed, controlled choices — it is not a fixed label for certain people. Drivers can be situational (bereavement, job loss, debt, relationship breakdown), health-related (mental health conditions, addiction, cognitive impairment), or contextual (isolation, financial pressure, or the influence of alcohol). A key modern insight is that vulnerability is often temporary and can affect anyone: a person who normally gambles without difficulty may become vulnerable during a period of stress or change. Because of this, protection frameworks increasingly expect operators to watch for signs of vulnerability and to treat affected customers with extra care, since standard tools and messaging may not be enough for someone whose judgement or resilience is temporarily reduced.

Worked example

A regular customer who recently lost their job begins depositing more and playing at unusual hours; their changed circumstances make them temporarily more vulnerable to harm, warranting a careful, supportive interaction rather than routine service.

Why it matters

Learners see that risk is dynamic and situational, not a trait of a stereotyped minority. Professionals must recognise and respond to vulnerability because a duty of care often hinges on spotting when someone's capacity to stay safe is reduced.
