Operator mega-mergers of 2016

MarketFebruary 2016United Kingdom / Europeverified 2026-08-03

Back-to-back mega-mergers created a handful of dominant multi-brand global gambling groups.

In early 2016 the industry consolidated sharply. Paddy Power and Betfair completed their roughly £5 billion merger to form Paddy Power Betfair in February 2016, while GVC Holdings completed its acquisition of bwin.party (about £1.1 billion) at the same time. Ladbrokes and Gala Coral also agreed to merge, reshaping the sector into a few large, diversified operators.

Rising regulatory and tax costs — such as Britain's new point-of-consumption regime — rewarded scale, pushing operators to combine sportsbook, casino, poker and exchange brands under single groups. Paddy Power Betfair paired a leading bookmaker with the world's biggest betting exchange, while GVC's purchase of bwin.party absorbed one of online gambling's best-known multi-product brands. This wave of mergers and acquisitions concentrated the market and created the multi-brand, multi-jurisdiction groups (later Flutter, Entain and others) that would dominate the next phase of the industry. Consolidation became the defining commercial trend of the mid-2010s.

Why it matters

The 2016 mergers forged the large, multi-brand operators that still dominate global gambling, showing how regulation and cost pressures drove consolidation.
