RTP is the theoretical percentage of total money wagered that a game returns to players across millions of rounds. A 96% RTP means that, over the long run, the game keeps 4% — the house edge. Crucially it is a long-run average over the entire player population, not a promise about your session: in the short run, variance dominates. RTP is fixed by the game's maths model (its par sheet) and verified by an accredited testing lab.

RTP and house edge are two sides of one coin

RTP plus the house edge always equals 100%. A 96% RTP slot has a 4% house edge; a 99.5% blackjack game has a 0.5% edge. The edge is what funds the operator; RTP is the same fact told from the player's side. If you know one, you know the other.

It is a long-run average, not a session promise

RTP only converges over an enormous number of rounds (the law of large numbers). Any single session can win or lose wildly around it — that spread is volatility. A headline '97% RTP' tells you nothing about your next 100 spins; it describes the aggregate of everyone's play over time.

The multi-RTP / configurable-RTP transparency problem

Many slots ship in several RTP versions — commonly 96%, 94% and 92%, sometimes down to ~88%. The operator chooses which build to deploy, and in most markets the player cannot see which one they are playing. Same game, same art, different maths. Some regulators (e.g. the UK) require RTP to be displayed; many do not — which is why 'what is this game's RTP?' often has no single answer.

Typical ranges

Online slots run about 92–97%. Table games with strategy return more: blackjack under optimal play ~99.5%, European roulette 97.3%, baccarat (banker) ~98.94%, American roulette 94.74%. As a rule, the simpler and flashier the game, the more of the edge is hidden in a lower RTP.

Worked example

Stake £1 a spin on a 96% RTP slot for 10,000 spins (£10,000 wagered). The long-run expectation is to get back £9,600 and lose £400 — the 4% edge. But any single 100-spin session could be up hundreds or down your whole bankroll: that is variance, not the RTP failing.
