Definition
Bet behind is a feature in live blackjack that works around the physical limit of seats at a table, usually seven. Players who cannot take a seat, or who simply prefer not to, can place a wager 'behind' a seated player, betting that that player's hand will win. The backer is paid or loses according to how the seated player's hand resolves, but has no say in whether that player hits, stands, splits, or doubles — those decisions rest entirely with the person in the seat, though some implementations let backers opt out of expensive plays like doubling. It lets a single table serve far more players at once, which is central to live-blackjack economics, but it means your result depends on a stranger's skill and choices.
Worked example
All seven seats at a live blackjack table are taken, so twenty more players place bet-behind wagers on a seated player known for solid play; when that player is dealt a 20 and wins, every backer wins too — but if they misplay and bust, the backers lose with them.
