DNFBP

A FATF category of non-bank businesses, including casinos, that are brought within anti-money-laundering obligations because of their laundering risk.

Definition

DNFBP stands for Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions, a FATF classification for sectors that are not banks or traditional financial institutions but are nonetheless exposed to money-laundering risk and therefore subject to AML obligations. The category typically includes casinos, real-estate agents, dealers in precious metals and stones, lawyers, accountants and trust and company service providers. Casinos are expressly named, which is why gambling operators must perform customer due diligence, monitoring and reporting comparable to financial institutions. The label signals that being outside banking does not put a business outside the AML perimeter.

Worked example

Because casinos are treated as a DNFBP under FATF standards, a licensed gambling operator must run the same core AML controls, due diligence, monitoring and reporting, that apply to regulated financial firms.

Why it matters

For learners it clarifies why gambling businesses carry bank-like AML duties. For professionals, understanding the DNFBP designation frames the regulatory expectations placed on operators.
