Handicap / Line

A virtual advantage or deficit applied to a team or player to level an uneven contest, expressed as points or goals added to their final result.

Definition

A handicap (or 'line') gives one side a head start and the other a deficit so a lopsided match becomes a roughly even, two-way bet. The favourite must overcome its deficit, for example win by more than the handicap, while the underdog's cushion means it can cover even by losing narrowly. Specific implementations include the Asian Handicap (used in football, often with quarter increments) and the US point spread; the underlying idea is the same. The handicap makes both sides pay close to even money, with the bookmaker's margin folded into the two prices.

Worked example

Team A is handicapped -1.5 and Team B +1.5. Backing Team A wins only if they win by 2 or more; backing Team B wins if they win, draw, or lose by exactly 1. A 1-0 Team A result means B (+1.5) covers.

Why it matters

The handicap is the foundational concept behind spreads and Asian lines, so grasping it early lets learners read the most widely used markets in football and US sports.
