Mobile Wallet (Apple/Google Pay)

A wallet on a phone or device that pays using a tokenized version of a stored card, authenticated by biometrics or a passcode.

Definition

A mobile wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay stores a customer's card in a device and pays by presenting a device-specific token and a one-time cryptogram instead of the real card number. Payment is confirmed with a biometric or device passcode, which typically satisfies strong customer authentication and can reduce fraud and friction at once. Because the underlying card is tokenized, the merchant never sees the actual PAN, lowering data-security scope. Availability depends on the customer's card, device, and the operator's provider supporting the wallet, and in gambling contexts some card issuers or wallet policies may restrict the category.

Worked example

A customer taps Apple Pay, confirms with Face ID, and a tokenized transaction funds the deposit without the real card number being exposed to the operator.

Why it matters

For learners, mobile wallets show tokenization and biometric authentication working together in everyday payments. For professionals, they can lift conversion and cut fraud, subject to device, issuer, and category support.
