Perfect Pairs

A blackjack side bet that your first two cards form a pair, paying more for pairs that also match in colour or suit.

Definition

Perfect Pairs is an optional wager placed alongside the main blackjack bet, resolved on the player's first two cards regardless of how the hand later plays out. It pays on a tiered scale: a 'mixed' pair (same rank, different colour) pays the least, a 'coloured' pair (same rank and colour, different suit) more, and a 'perfect' pair (same rank and same suit) the most, with a common paytable of 5:1 / 10:1 / 30:1. Because pairs, and especially suited pairs, are relatively rare, the side bet carries a much higher house edge than the base game, typically several times larger. It adds volatility and excitement but is a poor-value bet in pure expected terms.

Worked example

You place a $5 Perfect Pairs side bet and your first two cards are the eight of hearts and the eight of diamonds, a mixed pair. On a 5:1 mixed-pair payout you win $25. Had both eights been hearts (a perfect pair), a 30:1 payout would return $150, but that outcome is far rarer.

Why it matters

For learners, Perfect Pairs shows how eye-catching side bets trade a much worse edge for the chance of a big payout. For professionals, it is a prime example of why side-bet paytables must be read carefully, since the same-named bet can differ widely between operators.
