Rakeback

A partial refund of the rake a player has paid, returned by the operator as a loyalty incentive.

Definition

Rakeback is a program in which a poker operator returns a portion of the rake (the fee the house takes from pots or tournament entries) to the player, often as cash, points, or tiered loyalty rewards. It effectively lowers the cost of playing and can meaningfully improve a serious player's bottom line, since rake is a major long-run expense. Rakeback does not eliminate the house edge; it only reduces it, and it is calculated on money already wagered, so chasing rakeback by playing more or higher can easily cost more than it returns. Programs vary widely and some 'rakeback' is really a rewards scheme with conditions, so the effective rate is what matters, not the headline percentage.

Worked example

A grinder who pays 1,000 in rake over a month receives 300 back through a 30% rakeback deal, reducing their net cost of playing without changing the outcome of any individual hand.

Why it matters

Learners should understand rakeback lowers, but never removes, the house's cut, and is not a reason to play more than planned. Professionals factor effective rakeback into game selection and win-rate calculations, because at thin edges it can be the difference between winning and losing.

Note: Rakeback rates, formats, and terms vary significantly by operator and are frequently restructured; the concept is stable but specific deals are not.
