Sharp vs Square

Industry shorthand for sophisticated, winning bettors (sharps) versus casual recreational bettors (squares), whose patterns bookmakers read differently.

Definition

Sharps are professional or highly skilled bettors who wager on value and move markets; squares are recreational bettors who tend to bet favourites, overs, popular teams and parlays, often driven by fandom rather than price. Bookmakers weight sharp action more heavily when setting and adjusting lines and may limit sharp accounts, while welcoming and profiting from square action. The distinction matters because the vast majority of bettors are square, and as a group they lose to the margin over time.

Worked example

If 80% of tickets are on the favourite but the line moves toward the underdog, this reverse line movement often signals sharp money on the underdog outweighing the volume of small square bets.

Why it matters

Learners see that most bettors lose long-term and why, while professionals use reverse line movement as a clue to where sharp opinion sits.
