Transaction Monitoring

The systematic review of deposits, withdrawals and play patterns to detect transactions that may indicate money laundering, fraud or harm.

Definition

Transaction monitoring is the part of ongoing monitoring focused specifically on the money moving through and the wagering activity within an account. Operators use rules, thresholds and increasingly behavioural analytics to surface patterns such as rapid deposit-and-withdrawal with minimal play, structuring amounts to stay under reporting thresholds, use of many payment instruments, or activity inconsistent with a customer's stated profile. Alerts are triaged by analysts, who may request further evidence, restrict the account, or escalate for a suspicious activity report. Effective systems combine AML, fraud and safer-gambling signals rather than treating them in isolation.

Worked example

An automated rule flags an account that deposited by card, played through only a small fraction, then requested a withdrawal to a different beneficiary, prompting a manual review for possible laundering.

Why it matters

For learners it makes concrete how abstract laundering typologies are actually detected. For professionals, calibrating rules to catch real risk without drowning analysts in false positives is a central operational challenge.
