Travel Rule (Crypto/VASP)

An anti-money-laundering requirement that crypto service providers share sender and recipient information for transfers above a set threshold.

Definition

The Travel Rule, derived from FATF Recommendation 16, requires Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) such as exchanges, custodial wallets and similar businesses to collect and transmit identifying information about the originator and beneficiary of crypto transfers over a threshold (commonly around USD/EUR 1,000, though this varies by jurisdiction). It extends long-standing bank-wire rules to crypto and is a core reason crypto is far less anonymous than commonly believed at regulated on- and off-ramps. Crypto-gambling operators that qualify as VASPs may fall within its scope depending on where they operate.

Worked example

When a user withdraws crypto from one regulated exchange to another above the threshold, the sending exchange must pass the user's identifying details to the receiving one under the Travel Rule.

Why it matters

Learners see the limits of crypto anonymity; compliance professionals treat it as a central obligation for VASPs.
