On-Ramp / Off-Ramp

Services that convert traditional money into cryptocurrency (on-ramp) or crypto back into traditional money (off-ramp).

Definition

On-ramps let users buy crypto with fiat via bank transfer, card or payment app, typically through an exchange or broker, while off-ramps convert crypto back to fiat and withdraw to a bank account. These regulated gateways almost always require identity verification (KYC) and apply AML checks, and they are where crypto activity most visibly connects to the traditional financial system. For gamblers, ramps are the practical entry and exit points, and the moment at which winnings from an offshore crypto casino may need to be explained to a bank or tax authority.

Worked example

A user buys USDC on a regulated exchange with a bank transfer (on-ramp), gambles with it, then later sells winnings back to their bank (off-ramp), passing identity checks at both ends.

Why it matters

Learners realise crypto is not as detached from banks and tax as it seems; professionals see ramps as key KYC/AML and Travel-Rule chokepoints.
