Volatility, Variance & Hit Frequency

Why two games with the same RTP can feel completely different — the shape of the risk, not the average.

RTP tells you the long-run average; volatility (variance) tells you how bumpy the ride is around it. High-volatility games pay rarely but large; low-volatility games pay often but small. Hit frequency — how often any win lands — is a related but separate number. All three are independent of RTP: a 96% game can be tuned low- or high-variance.

Variance is the spread, not the average

Take two 96% slots: one pays small wins constantly (low variance), the other pays almost nothing until a rare huge hit (high variance). Same expected loss, wildly different session outcomes — and wildly different bankrolls needed to survive them. RTP is the destination; volatility is how rough the road is.

Hit frequency is not RTP and not volatility

Hit frequency is the percentage of spins that return anything at all — often 20–30% on slots. A high hit frequency full of sub-stake 'wins' can still be high-variance if the real RTP is carried by rare big hits. A game can pay you something often while still bleeding your bankroll.

Standard deviation and session outcomes

Volatility is quantified as the standard deviation of return per bet. Higher standard deviation means a wider distribution of outcomes, which means you need a bigger bankroll to survive the swings long enough for the RTP to assert itself. Chasing losses on a high-variance game is a variance trap, not a strategy.

Why it matters to the player

Volatility decides how likely a session ends up versus down, and how large the swings are — but it does not change the long-run edge. It changes how brutal the short run can be. Matching volatility to your bankroll and tolerance is the one genuine 'choice' a player has; it never turns a negative-EV game positive.

Worked example

Game A pays 2× on 45% of spins (low variance). Game B pays 100× on ~0.9% of spins and nothing otherwise (high variance). Both can be tuned to 96% RTP. Over 200 spins, Game A drifts gently below your start; Game B usually wipes the session — except the rare time it does not. Identical average, opposite experience.
