Definition

A network or wide-area jackpot links play from multiple machines or online games, often across different operators, into a single shared prize pool. A small slice of every qualifying stake feeds the pool, so with many contributors the jackpot can climb to very large, sometimes record-breaking amounts. Because so many players compete for one prize, the odds of any individual winning it are extremely small. The jackpot contribution is part of the game's total return, and the headline figure still comes out of players' collective stakes rather than from the operator's own funds.

Dozens of online casinos run the same jackpot slot, and a fraction of every spin across all of them feeds one shared pot. It grows into the millions until, on some single lucky spin somewhere on the network, one player wins the whole pool and it resets to a seed value.
