A single slot title is often not a single number. The same game frequently ships as a family of selectable return configurations — commonly something like 96%, 94% and 92% — from which an operator chooses one to deploy. Same artwork, same random source, same rules; a different pay table or symbol weighting under the surface. This is not a loophole. It is a documented, certified engineering practice, and understanding it is the difference between reading an RTP figure correctly and mistaking it for a fixed property of the brand.

Why one game has several returns

Studios build configurations so a single title can be sold into markets and operators with different commercial and regulatory requirements. Each build is a distinct mathematical model with its own theoretical RTP, produced by the same methods any RTP uses — see how RTP is calculated. The selection mechanism is treated as sensitive: GLI-11 requires that any switch or setting which can alter “paytables, game denomination, or payout percentages” be documented for the laboratory and secured, precisely because changing the configuration changes the certified maths.

What the certificate covers per configuration

A certificate attests to the build (or builds) actually submitted and tested — not to some abstract “the game.” The standard’s requirements then apply to each configuration on its own. GLI-11 is explicit that the minimum theoretical payout floor “shall be met for all wagering configurations”, so a 92% build and a 96% build each have to clear the bar independently. A configuration that was never submitted was never certified; the certificate is only as wide as what the laboratory saw.

Weighted averages and display duties

When returns vary within a single game across wager categories, some standards require the difference to be surfaced rather than buried. GLI-11, for chance-based slot pay tables where the theoretical payback percentage differs by more than 4% between wager categories, requires the device to maintain and display each category’s theoretical payback and to “calculate and display a weighted average theoretical payback percentage” for that pay table. Finding the configuration you are actually playing

The practical takeaway: the RTP that matters to you is the one the operator selected, which is not necessarily the highest the studio ever built. Where disclosure rules apply, that figure appears in the game’s own information or help screen — the theoretical return for the deployed build. If a game shows a range rather than a single figure, that range is the family of configurations, and the one in force is whichever the operator switched on.

Two players on the “same” slot can face genuinely different house edges — 4% on a 96% build, 8% on a 92% build — with nothing on the surface to tell them apart except the number in the information screen. Reading that screen is the only reliable way to know which configuration you are playing.

None of this makes a configured game dishonest; every build is separately certified and each meets the floor. It simply means RTP is a property of a specific build, not of a title’s name — the last and most practical correction in this pillar’s account of the number.
