Buy Feature
A slot mechanic that lets a player pay a fixed price — usually a multiple of their normal stake — to trigger a bonus round straight away instead of waiting for it to land during regular play.
Definition
The buy price is defined by the game's math model, commonly ranging from around 50x to 500x the base stake, and the purchased feature is tuned to its own return-to-player (RTP) figure that is often close to, and sometimes slightly higher than, the base-game RTP. Because a Buy Feature delivers a high-variance outcome for a large, concentrated cost, individual results swing sharply from one purchase to the next even though the long-run average return is fixed by design and remains below the amount staked. The mechanic does not remove the house edge; it only changes how and how fast a player reaches the bonus. Studios and operators disable it in markets where it is not permitted, so its availability is not universal.
Worked example
In a slot with a £1 base stake, a Buy Feature priced at 100x costs £100 to trigger the free-spins round. If that round is calibrated to 96.5% RTP, the average return is £96.50 per purchase — an expected cost of about £3.50 each time — but real outcomes vary enormously: many buys return only a few pounds while a rare one pays hundreds of times the cost. For contrast, an "ante bet" on the same game might add 25% to every spin (staking £1.25 instead of £1) to roughly double the natural trigger chance, spreading the cost across many spins rather than concentrating it into one large payment.
Why it matters
For game-math and product teams, a Buy Feature is a separate RTP configuration that must be modelled, certified, and often toggled per market. For player-protection and compliance staff it is a flagged mechanic: it raises the amount staked per action and can accelerate losses, which is why several regulators restrict or ban it. Understanding how it is priced and calibrated helps professionals reason clearly about volatility, spend velocity, and jurisdiction-specific game configuration — and helps learners see that a paid shortcut to the bonus does not improve a player's expected value.

Note: Buy-price multiples and feature RTP are studio- and operator-specific and set per game, so treat the figures above as illustrative. Legality varies sharply by jurisdiction: Buy Feature mechanics are prohibited or restricted in a number of regulated markets (for example Great Britain, the Netherlands, and several other EU jurisdictions), so both availability and the exact rules should be verified against current local regulation before relying on them.
