Cluster Pays

A slot win model where you are paid for groups of matching symbols that touch each other on the grid, instead of for symbols lined up along fixed paylines.

Definition

In a cluster pays game, a win forms when a minimum number of identical symbols — commonly four or five — land adjacent to one another (usually touching horizontally or vertically) anywhere on the grid, regardless of their exact position. The payout scales with the size of the cluster, so larger connected groups pay more. Cluster mechanics are typically built on larger grids (for example 6×5, 7×7 or 8×8) and are very often paired with a tumble/cascade feature, where winning symbols are removed and replaced so that a single spin can produce several successive cluster wins. It is one of three main ways slot wins are evaluated, alongside fixed paylines and "ways to win."

Worked example

On a 7×7 grid with the rule "pay for 5 or more matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically," a spin lands 8 connected green symbols. The game reads this as a single cluster of 8 and pays the green symbol's 8-tier prize — say 3× the total stake, so a £1 spin returns £3 for that cluster. Those 8 symbols then disappear and new symbols tumble down to fill the gaps; if the refill creates another qualifying cluster, it pays again and adds to the same spin. This chaining of cluster wins within one spin is how cluster-and-tumble games build larger combined wins, though most spins still return nothing.

Why it matters

Cluster pays is one of the three core win-evaluation models in slot design, so recognising it is fundamental to understanding how a game actually pays. For players it changes how wins are read (blocks of symbols rather than lines) and, combined with tumbling, how a single spin can escalate. For designers, product and analytics staff, the mechanic — especially with cascades — directly shapes hit frequency, volatility and how the target RTP is engineered, and it affects how the win logic must be explained clearly in the game rules and any marketing.

Note: Core concept is stable, but specifics vary by game and provider: the minimum cluster size (commonly 4–5, sometimes higher — e.g. 9 in NetEnt's Aloha! Cluster Pays), whether adjacency counts only orthogonal (horizontal/vertical) connections or also diagonals, the grid dimensions, and whether a tumble/cascade feature is included. "Cluster Pays" also began as a NetEnt-branded feature name (Aloha! Cluster Pays, 2016) before becoming a generic descriptor; exact paytable numbers in the example are illustrative, not from a specific game.
