Certified Fairness — How Labs Verify a Game
How a game's RNG and RTP are actually tested — the studio-to-lab-to-regulator chain behind 'certified fair'.
Before a game reaches a licensed casino, its randomness and its declared RTP are verified by an accredited independent testing lab, then relied on by the regulator. This is the handoff from the player-facing catalogue to the compliance world: the studio builds the maths, the lab tests it against recognised standards, and the licence makes that testing a legal requirement. A certificate attests behaviour on test day — not your session.
A studio submits a game; an accredited lab (GLI, eCOGRA, iTech Labs and others) tests the RNG for statistical randomness and unpredictability and confirms the observed RTP matches the declared model, against standards such as GLI-19 and NIST SP 800-22. The regulator then requires that certification as a condition of the licence. Fairness is enforced by this chain, not taken on trust.
A certificate confirms the RNG behaved randomly and the RTP matched its declaration on the day of testing. It does not guarantee your individual session, and it says nothing about which RTP variant the operator deployed (the multi-RTP problem). Certified-fair maths is necessary but not sufficient — the game can be provably fair and still carry a house edge that grinds down every player over time.
Two models coexist: mainstream licensed games rely on lab certification (you trust the licence and the audit chain); crypto casinos often add a provably-fair layer (you can verify each bet cryptographically). They answer different questions — certification covers the whole game's behaviour and RTP; provably-fair proves an individual result was not altered. Neither removes the edge.
