Cascading Reels

A mechanic where winning symbols are removed and new ones fall in to fill the gaps, allowing chained wins from a single spin.

Definition

In a cascading-reels slot, any symbols that form a win are cleared from the grid rather than staying in place. Remaining symbols drop down and fresh symbols fall from above to fill the empty positions, which can create a brand-new winning combination without another stake being placed. This can repeat several times in a row until a drop produces no new win. Many cascading games attach a rising multiplier that increases with each consecutive cascade, though the base odds are still set so the game returns less than it takes over time.

Worked example

You spin and land five matching gems that pay out. Those gems vanish, the symbols above tumble down, and two more of the same gem happen to land, forming a second win from the same spin. The cascade ends only when a drop produces no further match.

Why it matters

For a learner, cascades explain how one spin can produce a string of wins and why a game can feel action-packed even on a losing net result. For a professional, cascade probability and the multiplier ladder are core levers in math design and directly shape volatility and RTP.
